Headway Debuts Intelligent Wind Propulsion at SMM 2026

Headway Technology Group (Qingdao) Co., Ltd. has unveiled its intelligent wind propulsion system to the global market at SMM 2026, the world's leading maritime trade exhibitation, which opened at Hamburg Messe. The launch represents a significant milestone in Headway's strategic evolution, integrating full-stack ship intelligence with wind-assisted propulsion and accelerating the transition from technology development to engineering implementation and commercial deployment.


International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez visited the Headway booth on opening day.


1. From Individual Products to System-Level Efficiency

Headway is presenting a technology portfolio covering key aspects of ship operation and energy efficiency, including intelligent wind propulsion, propeller and rudder optimization, exhaust gas cleaning, alternative fuel supply, and onboard carbon capture. The intelligent wind propulsion system is the centerpiece of this year's showcase, underscoring Headway's evolution from a marine equipment supplier into a provider of intelligent, low-carbon system solutions.

At the booth, Headway is presenting an interactive model of its integrated ship energy-saving package. A smart ship control platform sits at the center of the architecture. Rotor sails and other units sit at the edge. The platform fuses wind speed and direction, ship speed and heading, vessel motion, main-engine condition, and weather-routing data, then jointly trims sail attitude, rudder, and propulsion. The loop is sense, decide, operate, and measure. The point is not to stack more energy-saving devices on deck. It is to let those systems work together inside clear safety limits and keep hunting for the best ship efficiency.



2. Scaling rotor sails from prototype to fleet

On the technology aspect, Headway is developing a research and validation framework led by the company, supported by university partnerships, and ultimately validated through sea trials. The company is working with leading universities on intelligent wind propulsion, focusing on hull–sail coupling, structural and control technologies, safety strategies, and shipboard testing. Headway also brings together specialists in artificial intelligence and optimization to advance the WAPS from rule-based, reactive control toward real-time decision-making that responds dynamically to weather conditions and the vessel's operating state. Development will remain safety-first, with edge-based operation, closed-loop data management, and progressive validation at sea—from prototypes and shore-based testing to demonstration vessels and series applications.

On the commercial side, Headway has completed a strategic investment in DEALFENG, a rotor-sail specialist with proven engineering experience in international shipping. The two companies bring complementary strengths in global sales, system integration, project delivery, and after-sales support. By combining in-house R&D, university partnerships, and industrial collaboration, Headway aims to connect the full value chain—from design and manufacturing to class approval, installation and commissioning, in-service optimization, and lifecycle support—helping accelerate the transition of wind propulsion technologies from prototypes to operational vessels.


3. A Through-Voyage Approach to Shipping’s Green Transition

On the opening day of the exhibition, Lu Kechao, Director of Development at Headway, spoke at the TradeWinds Shipowners Forum Germany 2026.

"Global shipping sits at the intersection of an energy transition and a digital one," Lu said. "What the industry needs is not only a more efficient equipment. But a system-level ability to cut fuel and emissions across the ship's life, and to keep proving and improving that result. Headway has grown from a single-product manufacturer into a provider of low-carbon, energy-saving solutions, with intelligence as the engine and end-to-end integration as the backbone. The full-chain package on our stand is that capability, in one place."

Headway says it will keep answering the transition with systems thinking: an intelligent technology mix that covers the full operating profile, and an engineering service that runs through the project life. The aim is a practical, system-level offering for shipping green shift.



Looking ahead, Headway will keep cooperating with owners and yards worldwide. It plans to prove the technology on demonstration ships, bring cost down through series manufacture, and back long-term operation with a global service network, so intelligent wind propulsion becomes a serious route for owners who have to balance emissions compliance, fuel economy, and operational safety, and so the industry has a solution that can be duplicated and scaled.
