SCR system has been generally recognized as the most effective solution to reduce the NOx emission, of which efficiency can be up to 90%.
Selective Reduction (SCR) is an exhaust gas aftertreatment method bywhich the NOx generated in a marine diesel engine can be reduced to a level in compliance with the NOx Tier III requirements.
The process of NOx reduction is as follows: Appropriate amount of ammonia source as reducing agent (normally in the form of aqueous urea)i5 injected into the exhaust gas. Subsequently the ammonia/exhaust gas mixture passes through catalyst block installed in the reactor, where the NOx is converted to nitrogen and water vapor.
l Aqueous Urea, 40% Wt: CO(NH2)2 + H2O
l Aqueous Urea decomposes to ammonia: CO(NH2)2 + H2O → NH3 + CO2
l Reaction between NOx and ammonia: NOx + NH3 + O2 → N2 + H2O
